Blacks in Canada

Blacks in Canada: between freedom and segregation

The first Africans to come to the New World were either free men accompanying explorers, or slaves.

The first African to arrive in New France was most likely the interpreter Mattieu da Costa. He was part of the Samuel de Champlain expedition that left France to found the Port Royal colony some time around 1606. Later on, many Blacks in the United States entered Canada to escape the slavery they were being subjected to in their own country.
