Rima Elkouri and Samian,
winners of the Diversity Award

Press release

Montreal, May 30, 2016 – ENSEMBLE for the respect of diversity is proud to bestow the Paul-Gérin-Lajoie Award for Diversity upon two public figures that have excelled in their promotion of respect for diversity and inclusion. The 2016 prizewinners are: author and La Presse columnist, Rima Elkouri, and rapper, Samian. They followed in the esteemed footsteps of last year’s recipient, renowned pianist Oliver Jones.

ENSEMBLE wishes to honour Rima Elkouri, author and La Presse columnist, who promotes the values of respect for diversity and justice through her powerful words. She regularly sheds light and holds our interest around the difficult subject matter of societal injustices. Importantly, she applies a great deal of accuracy, sensitivity, and empathy in her reporting, and provides a space for marginalized voices to be heard and valued.

The rapper and artist, Samian, will also be honoured for the important role he plays in bringing together aboriginal and non-aboriginal communities, and for constantly promoting greater social justice and harmony through his work. Through his music, writing, and activism, he shines as a positive role model for young people from all cultural backgrounds.

ENSEMBLE for the respect of diversity presents the Paul Gérin-Lajoie Award for Diversity to a person, or persons, who contribute to the promotion of human rights and diversity, and actively struggles against discrimination. Previous recipients include Oliver Jones, Kim Thùy, Danny Turcotte, Maxime Collard and her mother, Doctor Julien, as well as Father Emmett “Pops” Johns.

The awards will be presented before a crowd of 400 at the organization’s annual benefit cocktail, which will be held this coming Wednesday, June 1st, at 5:30 pm at Le Salon 1861, in Montreal. Details about purchasing tickets are available on the organization’s website (www.ensemble-rd.com).
